Become a GSA

 

We are seeking exemplary students to serve as Global Student Ambassadors (GSAs) during Summer Session 2!

This position is integral in supporting the efforts of the Office of Global Affairs’ Global Summer Institute (GSI) program. GSAs will work both independently and in a team setting to welcome and support incoming, short-term international students to Stony Brook University.

GSAs serve as a peer and mentor for our incoming international students and facilitate with their orientation and adjustment to campus.  Hours are flexible, but some evenings and weekends may be required.

Applications for Summer 2025 will be open in Spring 25.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Global Student Ambassador 
Paid position, # of positions available depends on enrollment, up to 10 hours/week.  TAs may have additional hours.

  • Assist new students with arrival, housing check-in, and orientation
  • Participate in pre-planned social activities during Summer Session 2
  • Plan and facilitate at least 1 gathering/social event per week
  • Communicate regularly with GSI staff and students
  • Select GSAs will serve as TAs in the classroom
  • Assist with other projects as designated by supervisor
  • Flexible hours but some evenings and weekends required
  • Check SBU email on a regular basis

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Native or near-native English speaker/ high level of English proficiency
  • Actively participate and generate enthusiasm at events
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to plan and facilitate social programming independently
  • Be able to navigate public transportation including local buses, LIRR, and SBU bus routes
  • Ability to be reliable, responsible, and flexible
