Senior Accountant (SBU Hospital)

Position Summary

Responsible for accurate accounting and maintenance of financial statements for food service at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook University Southampton Hospital, and the Long Island State Veterans Home.  Perform, maintain, and document monthly reconciliations, including cash and other various balance sheet accounts, as assigned.  Prepare and oversee journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations, and assist in the monthly close process.  Contribute to developing and reviewing departmental procedures and propose new ideas for efficiency.  Ensure compliance with GAAP.  Contribute to developing and reviewing departmental processes and propose new ideas for efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.  (In lieu of a degree, a combination of higher education and directly related experience will be considered.)
  • Four years of experience directly relating to accounting or finance.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial statements and cost accounting
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel (including experience with Pivot tables and VLOOKUP functions)
  • Experience preparing bank reconciliations on accounts with high volume
  • Experience with balance sheet reconciliations, including fixed asset/depreciation and prepaid schedules
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to manage and work harmoniously within a diverse workplace
  • Must show confidentiality in the performance of duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills
  • Good problem-solving and time-management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience with Oracle Fusion or ERP Accounting Systems
  • Experience preparing budgets and financial projections
  • Experience with month-end close processes

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze monthly financial statements and reports, including variance explanations.
  • Regular reviews with department managers for actual, forecasting, and budgeting purposes
  • Assist in preparing the annual budget and calendarization of spend for each location.
  • Development of ad-hoc research and analysis as required
  • Monthly COGS journal entries
  • Monthly reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, including inventory, accrued income, accrued expenses, and bank account reconciliations
  • Preparation of weekly sales and purchase summaries for flash reports
  • Provide support in developing financial projections and building financial models
  • Liaison between FSA finance team and FSA's Operators
  • Assessment and communication of internal control and risk management issues
  • Safe audits as needed
  • Submit quarterly journal transfers based on services provided to other Stony Brook
  • University Hospital departments.
  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable as needed
  • Assist in the internal and external audits
  • Other bookkeeping and clerical duties as assigned

Additional Details

FLSA: Exempt
Schedule: Full-time: Monday - Friday, day shift
Salary: $80,000 to $90,000 per year
