Office Assistant - Fall 2025
Position Description:
Our office assistants serve as the ASTC’s first point-of-contact for students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee administrative and customer service related functions of the reception desk
- Manage appointments including checking students in, coordinating appointment locations, answering questions about our services, and ensuring appointments begin/end on time
- Assist students with navigating ASTC services and creating appointments
- Create a friendly, welcoming, and supportive environment by providing outstanding customer service
- Enforce ASTC policies (ex: late cancellations, no-shows, appointment limits, etc.)
- Answer phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries
- Support professional and graduate staff with various administrative, programming, and outreach efforts
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled as a student at Stony Brook University with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Ideal candidates for this position are reliable, organized, adaptable, and resourceful; have excellent verbal and written communication skills; are proficient with computers; can work independently; have strong decision-making skills; demonstrate outstanding attention to detail; enjoy understanding and communicating policies and procedures; and have customer service experience.
* Must be able to attend training on the afternoon/evening of Sunday, August 24, 2025. (see below)
Hours: 8-12 hours/week. Work hours will fall within the following hours: Monday – Thursday 9am - 6:30pm and Friday 9am - 5pm, with occasional evening/night/weekend shifts.
Pay Rate: $16.50/hour
Start Date: In-person training will be held on Sunday, August 24th from 2pm - 6pm. Regular shifts will begin Monday, August 25th.
Position Length: We are looking for someone who can commit to working with the ASTC for multiple semesters. (Contingent on positive performance reviews.)

Graduate Student Employee - Fall 2025
*Please Note: This is NOT a tutoring position
Position Description:
Our graduate student coordinators play an integral role in ensuring our center runs efficiently. They work closely with our undergraduate student staff to provide support, supervision, and guidance.
This is an in-person position located on West Campus.
The responsibilities include:
- Overseeing the center’s daily activities and administrative tasks
- Assisting with the recruiting, interviewing, selecting, training, and supervising of student staff
- Facilitating multi-level peer tutor training programs, observing tutoring sessions, and providing feedback on tutoring strategies
- Presenting to classes and campus groups
- Managing the center in the absence of professional staff
- Managing various academic success initiatives and co-curricular programs
- Representing the ASTC at various campus events and during marketing/outreach activities
- Assisting with student staff social programming and professional development efforts
- Creating a friendly, welcoming, and supportive environment by providing outstanding customer service
Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at Stony Brook University.
Ideal candidates for this position are organized, adaptable, resourceful, and creative; have excellent verbal and written communication skills; are proficient with Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Docs/Sheets/Forms; demonstrate effective public speaking skills; can work independently and as a team member; and have strong decision-making skills. Candidates must be flexible, team-oriented, and passionate about student success.
Strong applicants enjoy helping others; have a high capacity for learning about and communicating policies, procedures, and information about various campus resources; can be productive in an environment with frequent distractions; and enjoy making on-the-spot decisions with the ultimate goal of helping students succeed.
Prior peer leadership, peer tutoring, and/or undergraduate teaching assistant experience is helpful, but not required. An interest in student support services is necessary.
Applicants who have either earned an undergraduate degree in or are currently enrolled in a graduate program for education (any level), human resource management, social work, communications, business management, or a related social science discipline will be given priority.
Pay Rate: $19.75/hour
Tuition remission, health insurance, retirement benefits, and housing are NOT available for hourly student assistant positions.Hours: 20-25 hours per week
- During the fall and spring semesters, work hours will generally fall within the following hours:
- Monday - Thursday 9:30am – 6:30pm and Fridays 9:30am - 5pm
- You must be able to work at least one Sunday evening per month
- You must be able to work a minimum of one late evening (Monday - Thursday) per week
- Occasionally, there will be additional evening and weekend hours that will be required.
Summer Training Requirement: Attendance at summer training is required.

Peer Tutor (Skill-Based Tutoring) - Fall 2025
Position Description:
Skill-based peer tutors help their peers explore and practice various academic success techniques for managing time, using evidence-based learning strategies, goal setting, organizing, prioritizing, note taking, test preparation, and more. They do not tutor specific courses, but instead tutor students on academic success strategies and behaviors that can be used in any class. Skill based tutors may also assist with class visits, workshops, and outreach events.
Qualifications:
Students interested in applying to be a skill-based tutor must:
- Be an undergraduate student who has been at SBU for at least 2 semesters (You can apply while still in your second semester at Stony Brook)
- Be willing to commit to a 1 semester paid internship during the fall 2025 semester
- If you are unable to work as a student assistant on campus, this internship can be taken unpaid
- Most students are offered the opportunity to continue in a paid position for future semesters
- Be able to register for an EXT 288/488 internship (choose either 0 or 2 credits)
- This can fulfill the EXP+ requirement for the SBC
- If you do not wish to earn credit, you can choose to complete the internship for zero credits

- Be able to dedicate 8 hours per week to this position including approximately 1.5 hours for weekly synchronous training, 1.5 hours for asynchronous training, and 5 hours of tutoring availability
- Must be available for weekly, in person, synchronous trainings at ONE of these times:
- Wednesdays from 2:00pm-3:30pm or Thursdays from 11:00am-12:30pm
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be able to demonstrate and discuss effective strategies related to time management, studying, goal setting, test-taking, and using campus resources, etc.
- Be in good academic and judicial standing at Stony Brook University
- Possess a positive attitude and passion for helping others
- Be willing to work both individually and as a part of a diverse team
What You'll Learn as a Skill-Based Tutor:
Students who participate in this internship opportunity will be able to:
- Work one-on-one with students to identify barriers to academic success
- Assess students' current practices and make suggestions for improvement
- Provide personalized support to peers who are seeking assistance
- Utilize and interpret various assessment tools
- Demonstrate effective academic success strategies
- Recognize and imitate proper workplace etiquette
Compensation: $17.00/hour; EXP+ SBC; internship credits (if desired)

Peer Tutor (Course-Based Tutoring) - Fall 2025
Position Description:
Tutors help peers to succeed academically. They conduct tutoring sessions to clarify course content and provide study strategies. They are selected on the basis of academic skill, character, and the ability to communicate well with others.Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- Must have attained a B+ or better in the course at Stony Brook
- Must be in good standing: No judicial or academic dishonesty charges
- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills and a desire to assist fellow students
- Must provide a brief recommendation from the course instructor for each course that the student wishes to tutor
Approximate # of Hours: Varies; Students can expect to commit about 6-8 hours/week to this position, including required weekly training.
Starting Pay Rate: $17/hour with pay increases available based on earned training certification level(s).
