Tripling FAQ's

Configurations

Students in triples will typically be housed in one of three different configurations. The configurations are as follows:

1. 1 Standard Bed, 1 Bunk (Includes 2 Beds), 2 Desks, 2 Dressers, 2 Closets/Armoires
2. 1 Loft, 1 Bunk (Includes 2 Beds), 2 Desks, 2 Dressers, 2 Closets/Armoires
3. 1 Loft, 1 Bunk (Includes 2 Beds), 3 Desks, 2 Dressers, 2 Closets/Armoires

If all three students in a tripled room collectively decide that they would like to change the configuration of their room, there will be a process communicated to them after the start of opening. Please talk to your Resident Assistant (RA) for more info!

We provide an initial furniture allocation based on room assignment bed space of -1, -2, or -3. Please see our guide for initial furniture allocation.

Common FAQ's

 

• Why does Stony Brook assign students to be tripled?

  The need for on-campus housing is growing, and despite the additional 3000 beds that were added over the course of the last 15 years, temporary housing is necessary to accommodate the number of students who are prioritized for housing, Housing renewals from returning students and enrollment into Stony Brook have increased.

• How long will temporary tripling last?

  While some students will be detripled within the Fall semester, some students may remain tripled throughout the Spring semester.

• How will I know if I am assigned to a temporary triple?

  Most residents will select their own space in new student room selection. When on the shopping cart page, you will see the room is designated a temporary triple in the room description of a double occupancy room. Additionally, students will be notified once their room has a third person assigned.

• How do three residents share a space designated for two?

  The key to living successfully in a triple is open communication and sharing your resources.  Campus Residences has created a space allocation formula to help residents decide how to allocate the furnishings within their room. Residents are also welcome to collaboratively come up with an alternative solution that meets their individual room’s needs.  There may be an opportunity, based on the style of room and available inventory, to loft the third bed and add a third desk to the room. Both Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) are available to mediate any potential issues that arise.

• How will I be notified when my room is detripled?

  We will detriple on a space available basis by reassigning the person in the "-3" bedspace to an available space nearby and notify them of the reassignment. Prior to move-in, reassignment will be made and the student will be notified via email. After move-in, the area office will send notice to coordinate a move within approximately a week timeframe. 

• Will I receive a discount for living in a triple?

  Students in a temporary triple will receive approximately a 15% reduction of the cost of their room rate for the duration of the time that they are living in a  temporary tripled room. If all three roommates agree that the person in the -3 bedspace can remain, then the room will no longer receive credit and be considered a voluntary temporary triple.

  Initially, students are billed the double room rate for their housing. When the temporary triple ends, a credit will be applied to the student account for the number of billing nights you were in a temporary triple. If your temporary triple lasts through the semester, a credit will be applied to your account during final exams.

• Can I request a room change while I'm tripled?

  Students in a triple are permitted to request 1:1 swaps into other tripled rooms through their area office. 

• What do I bring to my new room?

  We strongly urge temporary housing residents to contact their roommates to discuss larger items that they may wish to bring (TV, refrigerator, speakers, etc.) to reduce the possibility of redundancy. It is also important that all students pack responsibly to ensure that each roommate will have sufficient living space.

• How is it decided who moves from the room?

  The -3 bedspace will be reassigned.
