Anna Smith (BS, 2020)

Anna Smith with Wolfie

Anna Smith is a 2020 graduate of the atmospheric and oceanic sciences program with a minor in environmental humanities.

While at SoMAS, she was a member of the Meteorology Club and the SoMAS Dean's Advisory Board. She also served as the secretary for the Honors College Student Advisory Council at Stony Brook University.

Anna and Megan Gallagher worked together under the mentorship of David Taylor and Mark Lang to create a documentary about Long Island Planner Lee Koppelman. The film premiered on September 20, 2019 and focuses on Dr. Koppelman’s legacy on Long Island, tying together the history of expansion on post-war Long Island with Dr. Koppelman’s efforts at preservation.  The interviews with Dr. Larry Swanson, Dr. Tara Rider, Dr. DeWitt Davies, and Richard Murdocco connect the story to educational mission of Stony Brook University.

Anna is now an Environmental Specialist at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, where she educates the public on natural resource definitions and best management practices, and assists in the development of new educational tools and policy. In her free time, she also trains in brazilian jiu jitsu.
