Enterprise Risk Management
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a top-down methodology that looks at risk management
strategically from the perspective of the entire organization.
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is defined by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) as “a process, effected by an entity’s board of directors, management and other personnel, applied in strategy-setting and across the enterprise, designed to identify potential events that may affect the entity, and manage risk to be within its risk appetite, to provide reasonable assurance regarding the achievement of entity objectives.”

Policy & Compliance
Our mission is to effectively support the University's ongoing policy and compliance
endeavors. We support and guide the policy development process, strategize effective
implementation strategies, encourage broad communication, all while supporting compliance
accountability and opportunities to minimize institutional risk.
University Police
Our mission is to foster a safe environment for our campus community through proactive,
progressive, and professional law enforcement services. We greatly value honesty,
respectful interaction, professionalism, collaboration, and approachability. We take
a preventive approach, aiming to eliminate the problems that cause crime or allow
it to occur, rather than just reacting to events. We hold ourselves accountable to
the ideals found in our code of ethics. Our daily interactions with others in the
community have meaning. How we treat those around us, how we interact with individuals,
how we carry out our duties and responsibilities matter.
Office of Emergency Management (OEM)
The Office of Emergency Management seeks to safeguard our community from harm, while
our continuity efforts are focused on the continuation and restoration of critical
operations. No facility, organization, or community, including Stony Brook University,
is immune from disaster. OEM assesses all the possible crises that could impact our
organization. OEM works with first responders to ensure all stakeholders make it through
a crisis safely and maintains the organization's Emergency Management Plan and Emergency
Operations Center. The team holds regular drills to ensure that the entire campus
is aware of threats and knows what to do in case of an emergency. Beyond drills and
training sessions, the continuity team develops plans to avoid potential business-disrupting
problems and takes steps to maintain or restore the organization to its pre-crisis
state. The team collaborates with campus stakeholders to establish continuity plans
designed to minimize critical system losses ensure resilience.

Enterprise Risk Management Technology and Research & Development – Coming Soon
With our technology-driven world expanding rapidly, emergency services are often slow
to adapt to new trends. The ERM Lab is a partnership between the Division of Enterprise
Risk Management and the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology
was created to bridge this gap. The mission of this lab will be to foster the creation
of new technologies to enhance the effectiveness of emergency services and serve as
a proving ground to evaluate existing products and determine their operational impact.
