Leadership Announcements in Academic Affairs

1/29/2024

Dear Colleagues,

Following extensive consultation with multiple leadership bodies, including University Senate, I am pleased to share the appointments of three senior leaders who oversee critical components of the academic mission.

Effective immediately, the interim leaders of the provostial divisions of Enrollment Management, Global Affairs, and Undergraduate Education will take on the permanent leadership role for their respective divisions. Each leader will take on the title of Senior Associate Provost. These leaders have demonstrated exceptional skill in managing the activities of their respective areas; appointing them as the permanent leaders of their respective divisions allows Stony Brook to maintain current trajectory and strategy in their areas and retain institutional knowledge each of these leaders possesses. Further, the budgetary savings from not filling the vacant vice provost roles will be re-invested fully in each unit to address crucial service needs.

Each of these roles will continue to hold the same authority and responsibility as previous leaders of these divisions including a direct reporting line to the Provost and membership on the Provost’s leadership team.

The appointments are as follows:

Richard Beatty, Senior Associate Provost for Enrollment Management

As Senior Associate Provost and Chief Enrollment Officer for Stony Brook, Rich has overall responsibility for several departments including Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Enrollment Communications and overall Enrollment Management. He first came to Stony Brook in September 2022 as Associate Provost for Enrollment Management. Previously, he served for eight years at Farmingdale State College in a number of roles including Acting Chief Enrollment Officer, Director of Enrollment Planning and Technology, and Operations Manager. He has also served as a counselor for first-years, transfers, adult learners, and veterans with Long Island University and Felician University.

Rachelle Germana, Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education

As Senior Associate Provost, Shelley oversees a variety of divisional and University efforts aligned with retention and graduation, including an applied research lab dedicated to student success. Shelley has served since 2014 in Undergraduate Education at Stony Brook, and has worked professionally in higher education since 2001. Inspired by a sociology course she taught at Rutgers University for at-promise students, she shifted from the faculty career track to a focus on student success. A cognitive sociologist by training, Shelley uses her social science background to understand and support student transition, retention, and graduation.

Lindsi Walker, Senior Associate Provost for Global Affairs

As Senior Associate Provost, Lindsi serves as the university’s Senior International Officer and oversees the five units within the Office of Global Affairs, promoting university global engagement across campus and internationally. Lindsi has served in Global Affairs since 2009, most recently as Interim Vice Provost and previously as Senior Assistant Dean for International Academic Programs and Services in the Office of Global Affairs. She has steered Global Affairs to many significant accomplishments, prioritizing access to global academic experiences for students and the highest level of service to SBU’s international student population. Her dedication and efforts have helped Stony Brook expand its international profile through growth in diverse global partnerships.

Please join me in congratulating each of them on this appointment. I look forward to continuing to work with them as the leaders of these three divisions.

Sincerely,
Carl
