Leader Chosen for Continuing, Professional, and Executive Education

06/20/2023

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that following an extensive national search, led by an outstanding search committee, we have hired Peter Diplock as our Vice Provost for Continuing, Professional, and Executive Education. Dr. Diplock brings to this role a critical blend of skills and experiences that will support collaborative work with faculty and academic administration, and the development of an innovative ecosystem across the expanses of continuing, professional, and executive education at Stony Brook.

Dr. Diplock is currently at the University of Connecticut, where he serves as Associate Vice Provost for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

At UConn, he has been responsible for developing the infrastructure and vision to facilitate success and growth of mission-aligned online and entrepreneurial academic programs. Under his leadership, he synthesized intersecting capabilities in faculty development, instructional design, and educational technologies, and since 2012 has been responsible for the development of more than 50 graduate programs and 450 online courses. This includes a series of innovative free 1-credit “pop-up courses,” with a multi-disciplinary focus on a variety of critical topics such as COVID-19, climate change, and a series of anti-racism courses.

In addition, Dr. Diplock oversees UConn’s summer and winter academic programs, Early College Experience and Pre-College summer programs. In 2020, he established the Office of Continuing and Professional Education to advance the university’s efforts to support workforce development initiatives in Connecticut and launched the Office of Academic Program Assessment to support university efforts toward academic program outcome assessment and accreditation.

He is a co-PI on two NSF grants, a $2.25 million project to study the impact of an innovative STEM service-learning model, and a $2 million project to advance inclusive teaching and learning for neurodiverse engineering students. He is also a co-PI on a $575K HHMI grant to promote Inclusive and Equity Minded teaching and learning.

Dr. Diplock is enthusiastic about this opportunity to work with our outstanding team in the School of Professional Development and with the many partners who make our programs successful:

“Stony Brook is extremely well situated to accelerate its momentum across the key domains of entrepreneurial academic program development, K-12 teacher preparation, educational leadership preparation, and corporate and executive education, and I look forward to collaborating with the motivated and talented staff in SPD and across the university to drive academic program and student success.”

As he joins our community, Dr. Diplock will rely upon a close partnership with Pat Malone, Associate Vice President for Professional Education and Assistant Provost for Engaged Learning for the School of Professional Development. Her leadership has been critical in establishing programs, relationships, and other initiatives to advance the economic development and educational ecosystem across Long Island and beyond. She has been a trusted advisor to me throughout this search and will be a critical partner to Dr. Diplock as he transitions to Stony Brook to lead continuing, professional, and executive education.

At UConn since 2007, Dr. Diplock previously served as the director of the Master of Professional Studies Program, director and associate director of the Center for Continuing Studies, and director of the Bachelor of General Studies degree program. He has also held faculty positions in the Schools of Business at St. Joseph’s University and Clarkson University. Dr. Diplock earned a PhD in management and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Western Ontario. He is also adjunct faculty in the Department of Management in the School of Business at UConn.

I would like to thank the search committee for their exceptional leadership of the search process. They were incredibly thoughtful throughout their deliberations as they reviewed candidates and their alignment with our needs at Stony Brook. I would especially like to thank the search co-chairs, Elizabeth Newman, Vice Provost for Curriculum and Undergraduate Education, and Pat Bruckenthal, Dean of the School of Nursing.

I am excited to have Dr. Diplock join us at Stony Brook. Please join me in welcoming him to our community.

Sincerely,
Carl
