Celia Marshik Named Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education

05/17/2023

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that following a public internal search, Celia Marshik has been selected as Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education. Dr. Marshik has led the Graduate School since being named as interim dean and vice provost in late May 2022 and I am thrilled she will continue in this leadership role.

Dr. Marshik has been extremely effective in building a compelling vision for graduate education and post-doctoral support at Stony Brook. Moreover, she has led important initiatives to support academic program, student, and post-doc needs. In addition to rebuilding graduate staffing, she has worked to strengthen partnerships between graduate program leaders and academic support units to enhance support around admissions, recruiting, and retention. She has also worked closely with the Graduate Council to help shorten approval time for programs. And she has enhanced outreach from the Graduate School to the university, through events such as a new Conversations in Graduate Education speaker series and revamped Graduate Program Directors and Coordinators retreats.

Dr. Marshik has been a member of the Stony Brook faculty since 2001 and has served in a number of administrative and service roles, many of which focused on graduate education. She was chair of the Department of English from 2014 through 2020 and, previously, graduate program director for the department. She received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Service by a Graduate Program Director in 2010. Moreover, she is widely published in the field of modernist studies and was President of the Modernist Studies Association while department chair.

I would like to thank the search committee for their exceptional leadership of the search process. They handled this search with the utmost care and dedication. I would especially like to thank the search co-chairs, Shari Miller, Dean of the School of Social Welfare, and Paul Shepson, Dean of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

Please join me in congratulating Celia on her appointment to this role.

Sincerely,
Carl

Carl Lejuez
