Sinsheimer Scholar Award

The Renaissance School of Medicine and OVPR are actively accepting applications for this internal competition. If you are interested in applying to this program, you must submit a pre-application through the internal competitions submission portal. The Renaissance School of Medicine and OVPR invite applications for the J.P. Morgan and Alexandrine and Alexander L. Sinsheimer Fund Sinsheimer Scholar Award. Stony Brook University can nominate ONE candidate for this program.

WHAT DOES IT FUND: This program provides funding to individuals who demonstrate potential for making major contributions with respect to the prevention or cure of human disease. Priority will be given to funding researchers who have not yet received prestigious awards for their research.   

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Only School of Medicine faculty are eligible to apply. 
  • Researchers must be within five years of being appointed Assistant Professor. 
  • The Committee places priority on funding researchers who have not yet received prestigious awards for their research. Researchers who have already obtained substantial independent funding, will likely not qualify for this grant. Award amounts above the Sinsheimer Scholar Award amount are considered substantial independent funding, such as major NIH awards. 

AWARD: Up to $200,000 over two years (up to $100,000 each year); indirect costs are NOT allowed

SPONSOR DEADLINE: July 1, 2024

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

  • A research plan (2-page limit).  Must include: a. Objectives or aims of research, including significance of research and/or broader impact to the field; b. Design/methods; c. Expected results; d. How would you use these funds in a way that would be most transformative for your research?; e. Is there an overlap with this award in another lab?
  • Letter of recommendation from Department Chairperson 
  • Current/pending research support (1-page limit)
  • CV with Bibliography of publications
