Tasheka Sutton-Young

Assistant Vice President for Presidential Initiatives
Tasheka Sutton-Young is the Assistant Vice President for Presidential Initiatives at Stony Brook University. In this position, she handles matters of policy and institutional importance on behalf of the Office of the President.

Dr. Sutton-Young provides complex and confidential project management in support of the strategic mission of the university. She supports and sustains a culture of service, professionalism, and continuous improvement, while providing overall vision and leadership to the university’s efforts. She oversees Conferences and Special Events, while she manages and executes presidential initiatives and special projects, which includes providing leadership and oversight for issues/crisis management situations that may arise. Dr. Sutton Young previously served as the Executive Chief of Staff and Director of College Relations at Kingsborough Community College. 

Throughout her career, she has been a vanguard in the development, implementation, and coordination of numerous policies, systems, processes, and procedures that effectively served to improve department workflow, increase staff morality, and ameliorate student engagement and learning.

The eponymous Tasheka Sutton Spirit Award established at Stony Brook University in 2006 is awarded annually to a student who is passionate about positively representing fraternity and sorority life. This award honors the work Sutton-Young has accomplished over the years as a stalwart supporter of fraternity and sorority life, while passing onto ardent students the earned recognition and reward they deserve. 

Dr. Sutton-Young is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Outstanding Dissertation Scholarship Award, Mentorship Award, Advisor of the Year Award, and Student Affairs Service Award to name a few. Additionally, she is the author and presenter of numerous educational workshops.

Dr. Sutton-Young received her B.A. and M.A. in Communications from Iona College. She earned her doctorate in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College where her dissertation research focused on students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their transition to the community college.
