A Message from Maurie: Wishing You Health, Safety, Peace and More

Health, safety, peace and some well-deserved time to unwind and relax. These are my wishes for you as we enter winter break and the holiday season.
Before we all meet again next year, here are some items I want to share with you, which I hope you’ll find helpful, inspirational and motivational as we prepare for an exciting new year.

Help Us ‘REACH’ for the Moon
I’m inviting faculty, students and staff to help reimagine Stony Brook’s future over the next decade by participating in a brand-new, transformative initiative. Find out more about Project REACH (short for Reimagine • Accelerate Change) and how you can play a role. I encourage you to consider joining the REACH Visioning Committee – the nexus of campus-wide collaboration. The deadline to apply is January 17. The deadline to nominate someone to the committee is January 5.

Winter Commencement: Beautiful Conclusion to Fall Semester
It was heartwarming and so gratifying to once again see students receive their degrees, in person, with their guests, at our Winter Commencement on Friday, December 17. Congratulations to our most recent SBU graduates! Also read about an amazing military homecoming surprise for one of our graduates, which was covered by local media, including NBC-TV News.

The Alda Center is partnering in a new civic movement that encourages people to practice curiosity, empathy and courage. So inspirational and exactly what we stand for at Stony Brook! Find out more about the ‘Starts with Us’ movement.
I’m excited, too, about Student Affairs’ new Family Services and Support team – a direct line of contact for family members with concerns about their students, and another example of our student-centric focus here at SBU.

Get to know Professor Pei Fen Kuan and her accomplishments
The Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) recently honored Connie Kraft, RN, MSN, CEN, CHEP, NHDP-BC, Emergency Manager, Emergency Management Department, with the Julie Cangro Nurse of Excellence Award.
And … as I mentioned at the start of this email, I want to congratulate three outstanding
professionals in SHTM’s Respiratory Care Unit:
John Brittelli, RT, MS, RRT-NPS, RPFT, Clinical Associate Professor of Respiratory Care, was honored at our final Seawolves football game of the season as a Stony Brook Healthcare Hero for his years of dedication to respiratory care, as well as his work on the CoreVent 2020 ventilator during COVID.
Ann D. Cuccia, MPH, RRT-NPS, RPFT, AE-C, FAARC, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education of Respiratory Care, has been selected as a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care (FAARC). The award was established to recognize individuals who have made a profound and lasting contribution to the profession of respiratory care and to the AARC.
Lisa Endee, MPH, RT, RRT-SDS, RPSGT, RST, Clinical Associate Professor of Respiratory Care, recently received the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) Professional Development Service Award. The AAST recognizes individual members for their professional excellence, service and commitment to the association and to the sleep technology profession.
