Climate Week NYC and Our Commitment to Climate Justice

September 21, 2023

Dear Stony Brook Community,

As a global leader in the fight for our environment, Stony Brook has a rich history of leveraging scientific innovation and community engagement to drive groundbreaking research on climate science and to serve as a national leader in sustainable operations. Climate Week NYC—the largest annual climate event of its kind—is taking place now through September 24, with a vibrant agenda driving climate action and championing change. A number of activities that involve The New York Climate Exchange, as well as an overview of other climate-related strengths at Stony Brook, are detailed here.

Climate Week may be a single week, yet Stony Brook’s deeply-embedded commitment to climate justice is every day, year-round. From pioneering sustainability research, education and public service through our nationally recognized School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) to our active biodiversity conservation work through the Centre ValBio in Madagascar, our university’s historic leadership in driving society towards a greener future spans countless disciplines and all across our campus community.

Back in April, I shared news of an incredible opportunity unlocked right in our own backyard – Stony Brook’s selection as the anchor institution of the New York Climate Exchange set to drive dynamic solutions to the global climate crisis. As we take our place on the frontlines of the fight to address the biggest challenge of our time, I am equally excited to spotlight our Collaborative for the Earth, a multi-disciplinary climate “action-tank” supported by the Office of the Provost.

These are just snapshots of the broader range of climate initiatives that make up our incredible institution. As we come together to celebrate our collective commitment to addressing climate change, I encourage you to take small yet meaningful steps in your daily lives to achieve our shared vision for a more sustainable and resilient future – one where we combat the existential threat of climate change while nurturing the next generation of leaders to come.

Sincerely,
