U.S. Supreme Court Decision on Race-Based Admission

June 30, 2023

To the Stony Brook Campus Community,

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court released its much-awaited ruling on utilizing race as a determining factor in admissions decisions. For Stony Brook University, where access, equity and excellence are integral to elevating the social mobility of our graduates and their families, the Court’s decision is profoundly concerning. Yet Stony Brook’s focus on remaining a top destination for a diverse community of learners has never been stronger.

Our commitment to advancing opportunities for our students does not change because of the Court’s decision and in fact, it fuels the need to do more, to do better. Stony Brook and SUNY are studying the ruling closely, and while it will take some time to fully assess the Court’s findings, we will comply with our legal obligations.

I want to reassure prospective and current students and their families that Stony Brook remains one of the leading universities in the world for elevating the economic trajectory of its graduates. We pride ourselves on delivering a world-class, affordable education to a diverse student population; many of our students are the first in their families to attend college. And we are part of the best public system of higher education in the country led by Chancellor King and the SUNY Board of Trustees who share our commitment to student access and opportunity as outlined in their statement released in response to the Court’s decision.

Before us lies an opportunity to reflect on not only how this university serves prospective students, but the kind of learning community we create for them once they have arrived. Stony Brook must–and will–continue to foster an environment where all students can reach their full potential. We must continually challenge ourselves to address key questions: Where can we create deeper connections between students, mentors, communities, disciplines and departments? What do our students need to advance to graduation and beyond, to lives as leaders, thinkers, and change-makers? Are we supporting our students not only to sustain but to thrive? How we proceed during this time will shape our values as an institution and, most importantly, the futures of the students we serve.

The Stony Brook campus community has shown repeatedly it can and will rise up to support its members, meeting critical moments thoughtfully and respectfully. Our Statement of Community reminds us of the importance of promoting equality, civility, caring, accountability, and respect.

Together we will continue to welcome students from all backgrounds to embrace the exceptional opportunities offered by Stony Brook University, New York’s flagship public university. Today and always, we must deliver on our values of celebrating diversity and promoting mutual respect and understanding.

Sincerely,
