William Wertheim Named Executive Vice President, Stony Brook Medicine

June 17, 2024

Dear Members of the Stony Brook Community,

I am pleased to share that William Wertheim, MD, MBA, has been named as Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine effective June 18, 2024. I would like to thank Dr. Wertheim for his dedication and commitment to our mission of excellence in healthcare, education and research and for his willingness to steward Stony Brook Medicine’s leadership transition since his tenure as interim executive vice president began this past fall. As executive vice president, Dr. Wertheim will report directly to the Stony Brook president and serve as a key member of the senior leadership team.

In the time I have worked closely with him, I have been impressed by Dr. Wertheim’s engaging leadership style that prioritizes collaboration and action. He is deeply respected for his approach that has fostered a culture of teamwork and inclusivity and as a result, Stony Brook Medicine continues to make meaningful strides in expanding patient access, elevating research, and innovating in its approach to teaching and learning.

Under Dr. Wertheim's leadership, Stony Brook has grown patient visits throughout its hospitals, ambulatory centers and clinical practice groups. The recruitment of 28 new providers to the East End has allowed Stony Brook Medicine to serve 14,000 new patients in the community.  From supporting the development of clinical research spaces at Stony Brook University Hospital and the Lake Grove and Commack Advanced Specialty Care centers to participation in student and resident research days across the institution, it is clear Dr. Wertheim wholeheartedly believes in Stony Brook Medicine's research mission and supports innovation in clinical practice.

Since October, Dr. Wertheim has been actively engaging with leadership, faculty, staff and students across the enterprise and community leaders throughout the county and across the state, gaining their support and sharing details on Stony Brook Medicine's innovations in research, patient care and education. He has continued to evolve SBM Town Halls to promote two-way communication, ensuring that voices from all corners of the health system are heard and valued. Systemwide governance committees have been initiated to support his vision for a cohesive and integrated health system.

Over the past week, I met directly with Dr. Wertheim and many members of the Stony Brook Medicine leadership team while surveying all chairs to assess the best path forward for securing inspired  leadership. These conversations and survey responses showed strong support for  Dr. Wertheim’s continued leadership and ability to work with the team to ensure that the medical enterprise will continue to achieve significant milestones.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Wertheim on this new role, and thanking him for his nearly three decades of extraordinary service. I am confident that Stony Brook Medicine will continue to thrive under his leadership.

Sincerely,
