William Warren, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, to Depart in Coming Months

April 4, 2024

Dear Stony Brook Community,

William Warren, our Vice President for Marketing and Communications, advised me that he has accepted a position as Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communications at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and will be departing Stony Brook on May 30.

I am happy that Bill has a new and compelling opportunity and am grateful for his many contributions to Stony Brook. Bill joined us in September 2021, during a challenging time for the university and for the world, as we managed our way through the global pandemic. He helped us stay focused on telling the world about Stony Brook and the milestone achievements that have created such outstanding momentum for the university over the past few years.

As a valued member of my senior leadership team, Bill consistently has offered sound strategic guidance and forthright feedback. His collaborative approach has been essential to ensuring SBU’s ability to anticipate issues and respond effectively when issues arise.

Bill has built a strong leadership team in both marketing and communications and has expanded and strengthened his organization to advance a culture of creativity, transparency and responsiveness. Thanks to Bill and his team, the university is poised to launch a fresh and dynamic brand positioning that will enable us to better tell the Stony Brook University story.

Susan Foley is among the talented leaders Bill has recruited. Since joining Stony Brook one year ago, she has played a key role in setting new standards of excellence department wide. Currently serving as Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, she brings a rare breadth of experience across all marketing and communications functions and is ideally prepared to step up to lead the department. Susan has agreed to serve as Interim VP of Marketing and Communications, reporting to me. Tim Brown, Stony Brook Medicine’s Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, and the Stony Brook Medicine marketing and communications team, will continue to have a dual reporting relationship to Dr. Bill Wertheim, Interim Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine and the VP of Marketing and Communications.

Please join me in thanking Bill for his service to Stony Brook and wishing him well in this exciting next chapter.

Sincerely,
