Welcome to Spring 2023 at Stony Brook University

To the Campus Community,
Ahead of us is a semester of excitement, dynamism, and change. Right now it’s winter; we cocoon ourselves in layers and scarves, rushing through the wind and cold. Soon it will be spring; campus will be alive with color and new life. And before you know it, we’ll be finishing that mad dash toward the end of the semester. All the while, there will be performances on campus, opportunities to connect, lectures to attend, research discoveries to analyze, and fascinating debates from which to learn.
Stony Brook University—the number one public university in New York—is a campus that thrives on this energy. We possess a collective spirit of curiosity, ambition, and change that has made us an intellectual and cultural force across the state. In her State of the State Address on January 10, Governor Kathy Hochul showed strong support for Stony Brook by proposing capital funding to support new and renovated research buildings and laboratories as well as an endowment match that will inspire our philanthropic supporters to secure our long-term future while supporting current research and student scholarships.
This semester, I hope you explore all the diverse opportunities this world-class campus has to offer. On January 25, the Presidential Lecture Series will be hosting Frances Haugen—famous advocate for accountability and transparency in social media. Join us at the Wang Center on March 20 to hear scholar Ayelet Zohar in a free lecture—The Curious Case of the Camel in Modern Japan: [De]Colonialism, Orientalism, and Imagining Asia. On March 29, we’ll be treated to Starry Nights, a spring concert with our Stony Brook established musicians, rising stars, and Artist-in-Residence Colin Carr. From now thru February 17, The Southampton Review, the literary journal out of our MFA program in Creative Writing & Literature, is open for submissions from people at all stages in their literary efforts. Be on the lookout for updates on the Earthstock ‘23 festival and the Roth Regatta. And of course, I hope you join me in cheering on our track and field, basketball, and women’s swimming and diving teams this season.
I believe that all of us—in every department and discipline—can discover something new this semester. Because right now, in these cold winter months, each lecture hall, library, or laboratory can feel like a sanctuary–lit with the warmth of learning and knowledge. I’m so grateful that we’re able to spend the next four months together, on campus, at Stony Brook. Have a fantastic Spring 2023!
