Areas of Specialization: 20th and 21st century continental philosophy, phenomenology, feminist philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science and technology.
Dr. Carter’s upcoming monograph, entitled On Touch with Luce Irigaray (Palgrave), explores Irigaray’s recent interest in touch and her critique of the privileging of sight in Western metaphysical traditions. Dr. Carter’s work on phenomenology and quantum mechanics shows how phenomenology can shape quantum thinking and how quantum mechanics informs phenomenological thinking. In her work on the philosophy of technology, Dr. Carter challenges the blurring of boundaries between the natural and the artificial presented by emerging technologies such as AI.
Dr. Carter has been at the forefront of accessible education at Stony Brook, online and in person, with her emphasis on highly interactive large online courses as well as innovative classroom approaches to reach diverse students. She brings an interdisciplinary focus to her courses, drawing together themes at the intersection of science, technology, and humanities. She develops courses in digital intelligence (IAE 101) in Stony Brook’s groundbreaking Digital Intelligence Training Program, logical and critical reasoning (PHI 108), history of philosophy, philosophy of science, business ethics (BUS 447), and computer ethics.
