I work on automatic speech recognition (ASR) and other related topics.
Structure of a typical day
Most of my days include several meetings with colleagues where we brainstorm ideas or discuss recently obtained results, then I devote some time to research and implementation of new ideas, and there are always some low-pressure things like seminars or catching up on readings.
Advice to other students
Look for opportunities even where you don't expect to find them, meet new people, and remember that failures are at least as valuable as successes.
