I study the rise of the early music industry in Latin America, specifically in Cuba and Brazil. I'm interested in the ways that U.S. recording companies contributed to the development of consumer markets in those countries and how, in doing so, they participated in the consolidation of national cultures in Vargas-era Brazil and Batista-era Cuba.
