Research Mentor Training

decorative imageThe Graduate School  offers training on research mentoring for faculty, students and postdocs. Mentorship training can help participants become both better mentors and better mentees, and looks great on CVs and fellowship/grant proposals.

These workshops are based in the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) research  mentor training curriculum.

Training Outcomes

Upon completion of Stony Brook Research Mentor Training, participants will be able to:

  • Refine a philosophy for mentoring trainees.
  • Develop strategies for inclusive mentoring, aligning expectations, effective communication, and more.
  • Gain evidence of mentoring skills for grants. Certificates will be awarded upon completion.

Graduate students and postdocs will also explore strategies for "mentoring up" with advisors.

Training Format

Each training is a 2-part workshop series that consists of two half days. Please be sure to mark both dates on your calendar and commit to attending both sessions, which are required to receive a completion certificate.

Individual sessions will indicate whether they are held in-person or virtually via Zoom. Lunch will be provided for in-person sessions.
