COURSE DESCRIPTION: The main objective of this course is to familiarize the class participants with all aspects of cannabis including the history of use, cannabis plant biology, the chemistry of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids and the relationship to political, legal, and racism issues throughout history to the present.

This course is taught by Matthew Elmes, PhD.  Dr. Elmes' graduate work in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Stony Brook University made some impactful research contributions furthering our understanding of the metabolism and cellular transport mechanisms for THC, CBD, and other plant cannabinoids. Matt's postdoctoral work was supported by Artelo Biosciences, a cannabinoid-focused pharmaceutical company, where he was part of a team developing novel therapeutically active endocannabinoid-modulating drug compounds. In 2019 Matt transitioned to an R&D career in the California cannabis industry. He spent nearly three years as Scientific Director for CannaCraft where he played many diverse leadership roles for one of the largest cannabis companies in the world. He currently works as the Director of Green Analytics NY, an analytical cannabis laboratory serving the New York medical and recreational dispensary markets.
