Students in SoMAS programs have the opportunity to get to know and work closely with world class faculty, take field courses, and conduct research in a wide range of coastal and oceanic environments. SoMAS offers classes at the Stony Brook and Southampton campuses and students have access to world-class facilities well equipped to support research and education in a wide variety of oceanographic and atmospheric disciplines.


Undergraduate Programs

SoMAS offers the following undergraduate degree programs with a focus in Atmospheric Sciences:

This program offers students the opportunity to learn more about environmental issues and prepare for a wide variety of careers.

The Semester by the Sea program at the Southampton campus provides an immersive experience in marine science and maritime studies for Stony Brook and visiting undergraduates and recent graduates.

Graduate Programs

SoMAS offers the following graduate degree programs for Atmospheric Sciences:

For both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs, students must focus their studies to pursue the Atmospheric Sciences Track.

Graduate Certificate Programs are also available.

SoMAS graduate programs prepare students for exciting  careers in government, academia, not for profit organizations, and industry.

Combined Degree Programs

SoMAS offers the following combined degree program for Atmospheric Sciences:

Students will normally be considered for admission into the combined degree program after completing their junior year of undergraduate study-either before the start of their senior year or during their senior year. Students with exceptional records may be admitted during the junior year. Students who transfer to Stony Brook after their junior year must complete one semester at Stony Brook before they will be considered for admission to this combined degree program.

Any student considering this program should identify a potential MS advisor who has agreed to advise him or her, as part of the combined degree program is that he or she will begin doing graduate level research during the summer following their fourth year.).

This combined program is designed for outstanding students in the undergraduate ATM/ENS/MAR/MVB degree. The highly selective admissions requirements for students entering the combined degree program are as follows:

  • Overall Stony Brook undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required in courses required in the major  and
  • Letters of recommendation from two Stony Brook faculty members, including one who agrees to be student’s research advisor
